A LARGE ICON OF THE CONSOLAZIONE MOTHER OF GOD WITH ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST Veneto-Cretan, 17th century Tempera on cradled wood panel. Supporting Christ with her right arm, the Mother of God wearing a veil under her maphorion, Christ blessing, holding the globus cruciger and turned towards the Baptist, the latter bearing a cross and a scroll. The facial features accentuated with delicate white brushstrokes, the vestments with saturated colours against a gold background, set in a later gilded, wooden frame. Partially restored. 39 x 32.3 cm.
