Description
A LARGE ICON SHOWING SAINT ANNA OF KASHIN Russian, Moscow, after 1909 Oil on wood panel with kovcheg. Gold ground ornately punched. The saint is depicted full-length and almost frontally, wearing the habit of a nun of the Great Schema. The border is finely engraved with scrolling foliage and decorated emulating contemporary cloisonné enamel oklads. Four saints appear in medallions on the border. Restored. 44.2 x 38 cm. Saint Anna of Kashin was the daughter of the Prince of Rostov. In 1318, she entered a monastery in Tver, where she took monastic vows. She later moved to Kashin, where she died in 1337. Her general veneration was approved in 1649 but prohibited by Patriarch Joachim in 1677. In 1909, she was canonized again on the initiative of Tsar Nicholas II. Her feast day is October 2.
