Description
A LARGE ICON OF SAINT ANNA OF KASHIN Russia, Moscow, after 1909 Oil on wood panel with kovcheg, gold ground with ornamental punching. Full-length, nearly frontal depiction of Saint Anna, wearing the monastic habit of the Great Schema. The border finely engraved with foliate scrolls and decorated in the style of contemporary cloisonné enamel oklads. Four saints appear in medallions along the border. Some losses to the border, partially restored. 44.2 x 38 cm. Saint Anna of Kashin was the daughter of the Prince of Rostov. In 1318 she entered the convent in Tver, where she took her vows as a nun. Later she moved to Kashin, where she died in 1337. In 1649 the general veneration of the saint was established, but in 1677 this was prohibited by Patriarch Joachim. In 1909, through the initiative of Tsar Nicholas II, she was re-canonized. Her feast day is celebrated on October 2.
