Description
A LARGE DATED ICON SHOWING FAMILY PATRONS COMMEMORATING THE BORKI TRAIN DISASTER Russian, dated 1888 Tempera on wood panel. The haloes and the background gilded. Alexander Nevski, flanked by saints including Sts. Mary Magdalene, St. Barbara, Michael, Olga, George and St. Nicholas of Myra. The border made of gold, the stylised decoration emulating contemporary metal oklads. The composition probably the result of a private commission probably commemorating the Borki train disaster in 1888 and the salvation of the Imperial family. Cyrillic inscription on the lower border 'This holy icon was made to commemorate the miraculous rescue on 17 October 1888'. 35.7 x 30.8 cm.
