AN IMPORTANT TRAVELLING ICONOSTASIS Russian, 16th century Tempera on wood panels with kovcheg. Comprising fifteen hinged panels painted in three tiers, the lowest tier depicting the Deesis, Christ Enthroned in the centre with angels and saints praying to him, the second tier with important feasts of the Orthodox Church, the upper tier illustrating the prophets and Old Testament forefathers. The second tier also showing a rare subject: the story of the appearance of an angel to the commander Joshua before the capture of the city of Jericho. Minor areas of retouching.
