Description
AN EXTREMELY RARE RUTHENIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION AND THE PASSION OF CHRIST Carpathian Region, 17th century Heavy single wood panel with double kovcheg, oil on gesso. This exceptionally rare Ruthenian icon of the Crucifixion originates from the cultural sphere of the Eastern Slavs in the Carpathian area of present-day Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania. The inscriptions are written in a distinct language, different from Church Slavonic, which disappeared towards the end of the 17th century. Of particular interest is the unusual arrangement of the scenes: the cycle begins in the lower row with the second panel and continues counter-clockwise. Edges lightly restored. 37.5 x 32.2 cm.
