A VERY FINE MICRO-MOSAIC PANEL SHOWING ST. MICHAEL OF SYNNADA
Russian, St. Petersburg, probably Geroge Ferdinand Weckler, 19th century
Within a finely cast brass frame. 20.8 x 17 cm (with frame).
George Ferdinand Weckler (1800-1861) emerged from humble beginnings in Riga. Originally destined for a military career, fate steered him towards a different path. He found his true calling when he became an apprentice to a glass painter in Moscow. Serendipity intervened, bringing him in contact with Domenico Moglia, a distinguished Roman mosaicist residing in the city. Under Moglia's tutelage, Weckler mastered the intricate art of mosaics, marking the beginning of his illustrious journey into the world of micro-masterpieces.
In 1821, Weckler relocated to St. Petersburg, where his extraordinary talent quickly captured Imperial attention. Within a short span, he earned Imperial patronage and, in the following year, was honored with the prestigious title of Master of Mosaics at the Academy of Fine Arts. Weckler's artistic pilgrimage led him to Rome between 1834 and 1838, a pivotal period during which he meticulously crafted a life-sized replica of Raphael's 'Transfiguration'. This masterpiece, a testament to his skill and dedication, found its way into the hands of Emperor Nicholas I, who valued it at an astounding 25,000 roubles.
Upon his return to Russia, Weckler's brilliance was further recognized. He was appointed Director of Mosaics at St. Isaac's Cathedral, an esteemed position he adorned with his unparalleled creativity and passion. Weckler's micromosaic oeuvre is a captivating tapestry, weaving together a myriad of subjects, from captivating mythological scenes to exquisite topographical vistas of Imperial residences and captivating glimpses into Russian daily life.
In every delicate tesserae, Weckler's artistry tells a story, capturing the essence of an era and the spirit of a master craftsman. Today, we present a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of this legacy, a testament to Weckler's enduring influence on the world of art.
