Description
A LARGE AND VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE KAZANSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD WITH AN ANT NOUVEAU SILVER-GILT RIZA Russian, early 20th century (icon), Russian, Moscow, Dmitry Smirnov, 1905-1908 (riza) Oil on wood panel with velvet backing. The figures realistically painted, the Christ child with his right hand raised in a benediction, the Mother of God behind him. The riza border cast with stylized foliate scrolls set with cabochons. Marked with assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark 'D.S.' in Cyrillic. Minor areas of retouching. 41.7 x 35.4 cm. An icon in the Museum of Russian Icons in Moscow, but with an icon painted by Vasily Guryanov (31.2 x 26.8 cm) has an identical riza by Dmitry Smirnov.
