Description
A FINE AND IMPORTANT SIGNED AND DATED ICON OF THE FEODOROVSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD WITHIN KYOT Russian, Tomsk, Joseph Andreevich Pankruishev, dated 1914 Tempera on wood panel. Finely painted against a gilt incised ground within an oval cartouche. Immediately beneath her in an arched reserve a dedicatory inscription reading 'In commemoration of 300 years of the royal house of Romanov. 'In the upper left and right corners within circular medallions the standard Greek abbreviation for the Mother of God, and in the lower left corner within a reserve the code date of 1613 and in the lower right corner the date 1913 representing the dates corresponding to the Romanov tercentenary. In the oval band surrounding the Mother of God is inscribed the 'Royal Psalm' Psalm 20, 'O Lord, the king shall rejoice in your strength; and in your salvation he shall greatly exalt. You have granted him the desire of his soul, and have not withheld from him the request of his lips. For you have prevented him with blessings of goodness: you have set upon his head a crown of precious stone. He asked life of you, and you gave him length of days for ever and ever. His glory is great in your salvation: you will crown him with glory and majesty. For you will give him a blessing for ever and ever'. The verso with hand-painted dedicatory inscription, 'To his right reverence Anatoliy, Bishop of Tomsk and Altai, In commemoration of his coming to the Tomsk Eparchy, 22 August 1914; From Joseph Andreevich Pankruishev'. Contained in a later gilt-lined glazed wooden kiot. 22 x 17.5 cm (without glazed kyot).
