Cette charmante chose m'a été offerte par Serow pendant l'été 1899.' In 1899, Valentin Serov worked in Copenhagen on a portrait of Alexander III, commissioned by the Danish royal family. He is depicted in front of Fredensborg Palace, wearing the uniform of the Danish Royal Life Guards. This distinction was bestowed upon him after his marriage to Princess Dagmar of Denmark (the future Empress Maria Feodorovna).
