'STRAßENARBEITEN'

VLADIMIR AFANASYEVICH OVCHINNIKOV 1942 near Molotov (Perm) - 2015 St. Petersburg 'ROAD WORKS' Dated 1984 Oil on canvas. 60 x 45 cm (F. 64 x 50 cm). Signed in Cyrillic and dated lower left 'V. Ovchinnikov 84'. Verso: signed, titled in Cyrillic and dated. Vladimir Ovchinnikov is regarded as one of the leading representatives of the unofficial Leningrad art scene of the 1960s to 1980s. His works combine elements of "magical realism" and symbolism, drawing inspiration from traditional Russian icon painting. In his philosophical and poetic compositions, ordinary landscapes and everyday scenes acquire a deeper, often spiritual dimension. In contrast to official Soviet art, Ovchinnikov focused on themes of memory, faith, and the inner world of the individual. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist. Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
