TARAS HRYHOROVYCH SHEVCHENKO (ATTR.) 1814 Morintsy - 1861 St. Petersburg PORTRAIT OF MOTRIA KOCHUBEI Oil on canvas (relined). 50,8 × 38,5 cm (60 × 47 cm). Motria Kochubei (1688-1738) was the daughter of the Ukrainian nobleman and General Judge Vasyl Kochubei. She became known above all for her tragic love story with Hetman Ivan Mazepa. Their relationship caused political tensions within the Cossack elite, as Kochubei later denounced Mazepa to the Tsar. This episode has been widely depicted in Ukrainian literature, music, and art. Rest., rubbed, partial loss of paint. Taras Shevchenko was a Ukrainian poet and artist. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and was especially admired for his masterful etchings, portraits, and landscapes.
