VIOLIN AFTER 'NICOLAUS BERGONZI' AND VIOLIN BOW German, c. 1900 One-piece spruce top and maple back, brown varnish; with case. 4/4 violin; total length 59.5 cm, body length 35.9 cm. Label: 'Nicolaus Bergonzi Cremonensis faciebat 17..'; repair label: 'repariert Otto Schmelz, vorm. Stegmaier, Ingolstadt'. The Schmelz workshop (formerly Stegmaier) originated with the respected Ingolstadt instrument maker Ferdinand Stegmaier and retained his name as a mark of quality after the takeover. Violin bow, early 20th century; round stick, simple eye, leather thumb grip; unmarked; length 73.5 cm; part. bumped; wthout head plate. Violin shows some wear/damage; rest.
