SOUSAPHONE MARTIN WITH MOUTHPIECE AND CASE Elkhart, Indiana, USA, 1927 Sousaphone tuba made of brass, three valves with mother-of-pearl inlay. H. ca. 80, w. 86, bell diameter 66 cm. Marked on the bell 'Martin Handcrafted Elkhart Ind.', on the valves and bell serial number '76344'. With large lockable wooden case (h. 55, w. 107, d. 96 cm) marked 'Crescent Temple Band Trenton'. The sousaphone is a low brass instrument used in brass, jazz music and especially in marching bands. It was developed in the 1890s by John Philip Sousa and is distinguished by its characteristic upward-curving design, which allows the player to carry the instrument on his shoulder. The sousaphone is the successor to the helicon. A renowned manufacturer of sousaphones was the Martin Band Instrument Company in Elkhart, Indiana.
