Description
RARE VIOLIN 'FRANÇOIS CHANOT'* Mirecourt, 19th century. One-piece spruce top and maple back, brown varnish, ivory purfling to the ribs. Full-size (4/4) violin, length 59.3 cm, body length 37 cm. Branded to the back of the scroll with a seated putto playing a pan flute, an allegory of music. Upper bout 16.8 cm, middle bout 11.7 cm, lower bout 21 cm. Violin of rounded body form without pronounced corners, a model developed by François Chanot. The rounded silhouette follows an experimental early 19th-century approach aimed at freer resonance of the body and an alternative aesthetic appearance. Partially bumped and rubbed. **Provenance:** Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia. CITES marketing certificate is available. Please note that due to the current CITES regulations for ivory and tortoiseshell objects, unrestricted trade is only permitted within the European Community. An export license is required for shipment to third countries. Please inform yourself about the current import regulations for ivory and tortoiseshell in your country. It is currently not possible to export ivory to the USA, Canada or England. This item is not legal to sell in the UK.
