Description
KANUN (QANUN) 'OUD SUKAR' Damascus, Syria, late 20th century. Trapezoidal wooden body featuring four decoratively carved rosette soundholes; includes case and tuning key. Length approx. 109 cm. Maker's label 'Oud Sukar' inside. The kanun (or qanun) belongs to the family of Oriental box zithers and is one of the most important string instruments in the classical music traditions of the Middle East. Minor signs of wear and damage; crack on the back. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
