VIOLONCELLO PIERRE HEL WORKSHOP LÉON MOUGENOT AND CELLO BOW Lille, France, 1921 Two-piece spruce top and lightly flamed maple back, brown-orange varnish, with case. 4/4 cello, l. 129 cm, body l. 77 cm. Cello label: 'Grand Prix Stradiuarius Moderne fait dans l'atelier de P. Hel, Lille 1921 No. 485 Paris 1900'. Part. on rib, top and back bumped and rubbed, ready to play. CELLOBOW, 20th c., illegible marked, octagonal stick, silver mount, Parisian eye, mother-of-pearl inlay, ebonized frog, thumb leather and winding, l. 71.5 cm, weight approx. 82g. Min. rubbed, may need new bow hair. Pierre Jean Henry Hel (1884-1937) joined the workshop of his father Joseph Hel in 1902. Pierre Hel made copies of the Italian masters Stradivari, Amati, Guarneri for a few years and soon developed his own models. In addition to his own instruments, Pierre HEL developed a production of student quality instruments called "Stradivarius Moderne" with date and serial number. These were first made in his own workshop by his assistants, later commissioned by the workshop of Léon Mougenot.
