EDITH VAN LECKWYCK 1899 Antwerp - 1987 Amsterdam 'EGLISE DE ST. JEAN (KERK DE ST. JEAN)' (1931) Oil on canvas. F 65,5 x 77,5 cm. 60 x 72 cm. Signed and dated lower right. Verso: titled on the frame moulding. Edith Clementina Brunhilda Van Leckwyck (1899-1987) was a Belgian painter, known for her expressionist landscapes, cityscapes and, later in her career, colourful depictions of the sea and flora. During the First World War, she fled with her family to The Hague, where she received her first painting lessons. After returning to Antwerp, she studied under Floris Jespers and established contacts with artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Heinrich Campendonk. In 1935, she married Campendonk and moved with him to Amsterdam, where she initially put her own career on hold. Following his death in 1957, she devoted herself more fully to her own art once again. Frame. Provenance: Private collection Lower Rhine.
