Description
CARL PLÜCKEBAUM 1880 Düsseldorf - 1952 ibid. POSITANO, THE PATH TO THE MOUNTAIN CHAPEL. circa 1910s Oil on canvas, relined. 59 × 53 cm (f. 76 × 70 cm). Monogrammed and inscribed with the location lower left. Framed. A sun-drenched southern landscape rendered in a light, pointillist manner. Were it not for the characteristic "Pl" monogram in the lower left corner, one would scarcely suspect that this is a work by the Düsseldorf painter Carl Plückebaum, who is best known for his fairy-tale scenes featuring small gnomes and sprites that so often evoke the atmosphere of Christmas or Easter. This painting, however, is among the great rarities in his oeuvre and clearly demonstrates that Plückebaum's artistic talent extended far beyond subject matter shaped by public demand. Provenance: Private collection.
