Description
FRANZ SERAPH VON LENBACH 1836 Schrobenhausen - 1904 Munich PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN Oil on canvas. 52 x 36.5 cm (f. 74.5 x 58.5 cm). Verso: canvas with stamp; label on the stretcher: "Galerie Heinemann, Munich 17050". Framed. Attached to the stretcher is a sheet of paper with a handwritten note, by Edgar Hanfstaengl (1885-1957), art historian and curator of the Bavarian State Painting Collections (which include the Alte Pinakothek) in the early 1920s: "The authenticity of the painting presented to me, 'Portrait of a Gentleman', in profile to the left, H. 0.52, W. 0.36, as a work by Franz von Lenbach is beyond any doubt. Munich, Alte Pinakothek, 24 June 1923 (?). Hanfstaengl, Curator." Provenance: Galerie Heinemann, Munich, 1923; Private collection.
