Description
PAUL MÜLLER-KAEMPFF 1861 Oldenburg - 1941 Berlin "OCTOBER MORNING" Oil on canvas. 61 × 112 cm (framed: 75 × 124 cm). Signed lower right. Verso: On the stretcher are remnants of an exhibition label with a number, as well as handwritten notes relating to the painting: "Paul Müller-Kaempff, Ahrenshoop near Wustrow (illegible), 'October Morning' / N-1." Paul Müller-Kaempff, co-founder of the artists' colony of Ahrenshoop, is regarded as the most significant painter of the Western Pomeranian coastal landscape. At the center of the composition are the region's characteristic whitewashed fishermen's houses with their deeply overhanging thatched roofs. The viewer's gaze is led along a sandy dune path sparsely covered with vegetation into the depth of the scene, where the broad expanse of the Bodden lies beneath a dynamically clouded sky. Particularly noteworthy is Müller-Kaempff's mastery in rendering light: the low autumn sun breaks through the heavy cloud cover, illuminating parts of the settlement, while large areas of the landscape remain in soft cloud shadow. Partial craquelure. Framed. Literature: Cf. Schreyer: Paul Müller-Kaempff and the Artists' Colony of Ahrenshoop, 2006. Provenance: According to the consignor, formerly acquired directly from the artist. Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
