FERDINAND WAGNER 1847 Passau - 1927 Munich Monumental painting. Stag Hunt Oil on canvas, doubl. on wood. SM 118 x 380 cm (R. 141 x 402 cm). Inscribed lower left 'Pinx. This monumental painting, which impresses not only by its size but also by the complexity of its composition, is by Ferdinand Wagner. The painting was created in the spirit of Historicism and shows all the characteristics of this style, its interest and reverence for the scale and splendour of past eras. Ferdinand Wagner was an established artist who created numerous wall and ceiling paintings, of which the paintings in the Ratskeller and Deutsches Theater in Munich, the dining room of the Drachenburg near Königswinter on the Rhine, the Café Roth and Luitpold in Munich and the Tivoli Restaurant in London are particularly noteworthy.
