Description
CHRISTIAN FREDERIK HOLM 1804 Copenhagen - 1846 Tivoli HUNTING SCENE Oil on canvas. 98.5 x 79 cm (f. 85 x 95 cm). Signed lower right. Partially retouched. Framed. Executed in Munich, this work depicts a dynamic hunting scene set in a narrow mountain gorge. A herd of chamois, pursued by hunters, rushes through the rocky terrain, while in the foreground two deer with fear-widened eyes are rendered with remarkable mastery. The distant figures of the hunters are only faintly visible. The composition combines tension and movement with a meticulous study of animal life, characteristic of the artist's oeuvre. Christian Frederik Holm studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, turned from history painting to animal painting under Christian David Gebauer, and undertook study trips to Dresden, Munich, and Italy. His works were regularly exhibited at Charlottenborg Palace and were acquired by the Danish royal court.
