Description
Jules Rene Herve 1887 Langres - 1981 (?) THE LITTLE BAKERY Gouache on cardboard. 49 x 59 cm (f. 66 x 77 cm). Signed lower left. Framed behind glass (frame sealed). The work is executed in the characteristic style of Jules Rene Herve, featuring a light brushstroke and a color palette dominated by greys and ochres, interspersed with small, vivid accents. Herve studied under Fernand Cormon and Jules Adler. Beginning in 1910, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. He later returned to his native town, where he remained for the rest of his life. There, he focused on depictions of modest, everyday scenes and portraits of a reserved, quiet society. His works were among the highlights of the Salon des Artistes Francais until 1940. Provenance: Estate of Dr. Jean Michaud.
