HANS KOHLSCHEIN 1879 Dusseldorf - 1948 Warburg THE GORDON BENNETT CUP THROUGH THE TAUNUS, 1904, WITH THE MERCEDES OF 'THE RED DEVIL' CAMILLE JENATZY Oil on canvas. 55 x 94 cm (f. 78 x 117 cm). Signed and dated lower left, inscribed upper left: "Der Mercedeswagen in Gordon-Bennett (Jenatzy)." Framed. Painted in 1904, this work by Hans Kohlschein depicts the Gordon Bennett Cup through the Taunus, featuring the famed "Red Devil" Camille Jenatzy in his Mercedes. The artist not only captures the excitement of one of the most modern and prestigious motorsport events of its time but also masterfully conveys a sense of speed and dynamism. The painting holds particular historical significance as it represents probably the first artistic depiction of a Mercedes racing car at all.
