Description
ALBERT MARIE LEBOURG 1849 Montfort-sur-Risle - 1928 Rouen BOATS IN THE HARBOR Oil on canvas, 31 x 38 cm (f. 44 x 52 cm). Signed lower left 'A. Lebourg'. Verso: stretcher with stamp of Parisian maker 'Revel et Coccoz, Boulevard de Clichy'. Framed. Albert Lebourg trained at the art academies in Rouen and Paris and was strongly influenced by the landscape traditions of Dupre and Isabey. From 1872 to 1876, he lived in Algeria, where he taught drawing and absorbed the unique light and color of the southern coast. After returning to Paris, he abandoned an academic career to devote himself fully to plein air painting. In 1879, he participated in the 4th Impressionist exhibition, presenting over thirty works created in Algeria. Later, he worked in Normandy, Paris, Ile-de-France, and Holland. His paintings are characterized by a sensitive handling of light and atmosphere, combined with a loose, free brushwork. Lebourg enjoyed great recognition both during his lifetime and posthumously. His works are held in major French museums, including the Musee d'Orsay, Musee Carnavalet, Petit Palais, and the Musee de Rouen. Provenance: Estate of Dr. Michaux.
