Description
HANS VON MARÉES 1837 Elberfeld - 1887 Rome PORTRAIT OF A LADY, circa 1863 Oil on canvas, relined. 72.5 x 58 cm (F. 98 x 84 cm). In frame. The present portrait is a noteworthy new discovery within the ouvre of Hans von Marées. The work was exhibited at the Galerie Thannhauser in Munich in 1923 and was professionally recognized by Julius Meier-Graefe in this context. Meier-Graefe subsequently included the painting in the supplement to his catalogue raisonné (published in "Ganymed," 1925). As the painting remained in private hands and was inaccessible for research in the following decades, it was listed in the catalogue by U. Gerlach-Laxner (1980) with the note "location unknown". Literature: Ganymed, IV, 1922, p. 307; Ganymed, V, 1925, p. 245, illus. after p. 242; U. Gerlach-Laxner: Hans von Marées. Katalog der Gemälde, Munich 1980, p. 215, no. 224. Provenance: Art Trade, Frankfurt a.M.; Carl Droell, Duisburg (1922); Art Trade (1925); Private Collection, Essen.
