GIAN LORENZO BERNINI 1598 Naples - 1680 Rome (After) 'APOLLO AND DAPHNE' Italy, c. 1900 Bronze, brown patina, on a naturalistic plinth. H. 36, W. 19.5, D. 11.5 cm; weight approx. 3.85 kg. Unsigned. A fully modeled depiction of the mythological scene 'Apollo and Daphne,' based on Gian Lorenzo Bernini's famous Baroque marble sculpture (1622-1625). It portrays the transformation described in Ovid's *Metamorphoses*, in which Daphne turns into a laurel tree while fleeing from Apollo. Min. rubbed and bumped; partial loss of patina; Apollo's rear arm attached via a peg joint. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
