Description
A GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF AMIDA NYORAI Japan, Edo period Wood. H. ca. 63 cm. Amida is seated in dhyanasana atop a multi-tiered circular base, with his hands resting in mida no jouin (dhyana mudra). He wears a loose-fitting monastic robe opening at the chest and cascading in voluminous folds. His serene face, with heavy-lidded downcast eyes beneath gently arched brows, is centered by a circular rock crystal byakugo (urna) and flanked by long pendulous earlobes. His hair is arranged in tight curls over a domed ushnisha, with a further hardstone inlay. Behind him is a kohai (aureole) with a central lotus flower from which the rays extend. With traces of age, partially abraded, cracked and slightly chipped.
