A 'BOYS AND FRET-WORK' NINGXIA KANG CARPET China, 17th century Wool. 418 x 386 cm. The carpet centers on a medallion enclosing boys at play, surrounded in the four corners by phoenixes. The ground is decorated with a fret-work(swastika) pattern. The border comprises three decorative bands: one with peony lattice, one with Buddhist lions, and one with scroll motifs. With traces of age, localized areas of light wear and corrosion with intermittent areas of associated repiling and restoration.
