A LARGE POLYCHROME KAKEMONO DEPICTING THE PARINIRVANA Japan, 19th century Ink and colour on paper, framed and under glass. 163 × 133 cm (incl. frame). The painting depicts the Parinirvana of the Buddha, shown reclining on a pedestal within a grove surrounded by water and mourned by a large and diverse assembly of followers, including rakan and various protective and guardian deities arranged around him. With traces of age, partially creased.
