Description
A LARGE FULL-TIP RHINOCEROS HORN CUP* China, late Qing Dynasty Rhinoceros horn. H. ca. 90 cm with base. Finely and intricately pierced and carved over the entire horn, depicting a dragon weaving through clouds at the top, and in the remaining section the Eight Immortals together with several antelopes and other mythical beasts among blossoming and fruiting trees. The horn displays a warm honey tone, shading to dark brown at the tip. The massive wood stand is delicately carved with lingzhi fungi sprouting from rocky outcrops, and a herdboy seated on the back of one water buffalo, another standing beside him, all beneath pine trees. With traces of age, the horn is partially cracked and slightly damaged at the top, showing evidence of oil treatment for preservation; the stand is also partially damaged.
