Description
AN AMULET SHRINE (GAU) China (Tibet), 18th century Copper alloy. H. 10.8 cm. Rectangular, shrine-form amulet box with rich relief decoration. The front centered with Shakyamuni Buddha (possibly also Amoghasiddhi) in abhaya mudra, flanked by the two disciples Ananda and Mahakasyapa. The upper register with Garuda depicted in flight. The lower section with a Tibetan inscription of the six-syllable Avalokiteshvara mantra. The reverse engraved with a visvavajra (double vajra) and a Tibetan inscription of the wisdom mantra of the Bodhisattva Manjushri. With traces of age and use, partially damaged and abraded. Literature: A closely related example is recorded in the Himalayan Art Database (item no. 75110); it is held in the collection of the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, inv. no. 85.06.0504..
