FRENCH SCHOOL Master, active 2nd half of the 18th cetury. VENUS PUNISHES THE NAUGHTY AMOR Oil on canvas (relined). 65 cm x 82 cm (F. 91 cm x 76 cm). Part. slightly restored. Frame. Mythological scenery with Venus and her son Amor, with a strong narrative moment. The goddess of love holds her son Amor by the leg, so that the boy hangs upside down. With a fluttering robe and sweeping, she disciplines him with a bunch of rose branches. The rose, actually a symbol of love, takes on the function of bringing the naughty son back to reason. As a reference to the young gods boyished prank, little arrows with pierced hearts are scattered at the feet of Venus. Amor has blindfolded and with his left hand he clings tightly to his bow.
