Description
ITALIAN SCHOOL IN THE CIRCLE OF GIROLAMO MUZIANO 1528 Acquafredda - 1592 Rome STUDY OF A SEATED PANS Black chalk or pencil on bluish handmade paper (watermark: three crescent moons). Visible dimensions: 31 x 41.5 cm, passe-partout dimensions: 42 x 54 cm. Stained, losses in the lower right corner, crease marks in the centre. Powerful, mannerist study of a Pan with twisted upper body and plastic modelling through dense hatching. Stylistically, the drawing is closely related to the Roman-Florentine academic tradition of the late Renaissance, in the circle of Federico Zuccari and Girolamo Muziano. The watermark of three crescent moons in descending size - common for Italian paper, probably Rome or Latium, late 16th century (ca. 1570-1600) - supports an attribution to the circle of Girolamo Muziano or the Roman drawing tradition of that period. Provenance: International private collection.
