In terms of mood, characterisation and interior treatment, the painting is close to Dutch genre painting of the late 17th century and shows a clear affinity with the work of Hendrick ten Oever, whose interior scenes are characterised by seriousness, sobriety and a quiet observation of everyday rural life. In contrast to the more humorous or narrative depictions of the Ostade circle, the scene here appears deliberately restrained and matter-of-fact. Provenance: Rhenish private collection.
