Description
ATTRIBUTED TO MICHIEL VAN MIEREVELT ('Also Michiel Janz. van Mierevelt (Miereveld or Miereveldt)') 1 May 1567 Delft - 27 June 1641 Ibid HALF-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF WILLEM OF ORANJE Oil on oak panel. 58 x 48 cm (f. 86 x 75 cm). Part. min. old rest:, old retouching. Frame. An identical painting by Michiel van Mierevelt, painted in 1617 and long thought to be lost, was recently exhibited at the Historisches Museum Den Briel. 'William of Orange wears a black suit of armour with gilded decorations, referring to his status as a high nobleman and his role as army commander of the rebellious Netherlands. The richly folded collar of cloth is reminiscent of the collar with which the prince is depicted on the seat of his tomb in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft, completed in 1623, by the sculptor Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621).'
