Description
GIROLAMO TROPPA AND WORKSHOP 2 October 1636 Rocchette - 1711 Terni THE HEALING OF TOBIAS Oil on canvas (old relining). 101 x 134.5 cm (F. 117 x 151 cm). Part. min. old rest., part. old retouching. Frame. Literature: Schleier, Erich: La pittura italiana del sei e settecento nel Museo Di Ponce: Nuove proposte e problemi attributivi, in: Antichità Viva. Rassegna D'Arte, Anno XIX, No. 1, Florence 1980, pp. 26 ff., figs. 12, 13 and 14. Accompanied by a statement by Erich Schleier (Staatliche Museen Preußischer Kulturbesitz Berlin, Gemäldegalerie) dated 1 June 1989, in which he states: "Unfortunately, this appears to be a painting only from the workshop, perhaps with participation of the master in the face of the old Tobias, by Girolamo Troppa, a painter from Rocchetta in Sabina (born c. 1636, died after 1706). There are three other versions of the same composition and one closely related composition. I assembled the four versions in an article on the Museum in Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1980, where the (best) original version is located. After my opinion that the work was by Troppa had been cited in the catalogue of the Museum of Ponce (197.), I erroneously rejected this attribution in my 1980 article and published the paintings under the anonymous designation of a 'Master of the Healing of Tobias'. The correct attribution of the entire group was subsequently established by Vittorio Casale, Alcune precisazioni sui disegni di Lazzaro Baldi, in Proporzioni 33-36, 1984, p. 274, note 35." Provenance: Kunsthandel Klendauer, Wiesbaden.
