Verso: Extensively inscribed in old script on the plate in ink. Minor old rest., slight old retouching. Frame. This small-format painting depicts the Holy Family in an intimate, pastoral setting. Mary sits at the centre of the composition, wearing a red robe and blue-green cloak, holding the Christ Child on her lap. The infant John, dressed in a fur robe, embraces the child in an intimate gesture, while Joseph, slightly withdrawn, looks at the scene from the semi-shadows. A tree with finely detailed leaves frames the depiction on the left and reinforces the landscape character of the picture. The delicate modelling of the faces, the softly rounded bodies of the children and the harmonious colouring with warm red and green tones clearly refer to the Bolognese circle of Denys Calvaert, who is known for his synthesis of Flemish attention to detail with Italian ideal beauty. Particularly characteristic are the gentle transitions from light to shadow, the calm, balanced composition, and the emphatically intimate, devotional character typical of small-format works from Calvaert's circle. Compared to Denys Calvaert's established major works, however, the execution appears less complex in terms of anatomical detail and glazing technique, which suggests that it was created in the artist's immediate circle or workshop. The work is exemplary of the productive phase of Bolognese painting around 1600, which also produced numerous later masters (in collaboration with: Open AI, ChatGPT, personal correspondence from the author dated 19 December 2025). Cf. works by Denys Calvaert in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland and comparable small-format devotional paintings from the Bolognese circle of the late 16th century. Provenance: Private collection, Rhineland. Die kleinformatige Darstellung zeigt die Heilige Familie in inniger, pastoral geprägter Szenerie. Maria sitzt im Zentrum der Komposition, in rotem Gewand und blaugrünem Mantel, und hält das Christuskind auf ihrem Schoß. Der Johannesknabe, mit Fellgewand bekleidet, umarmt das Kind in vertrauter Geste, während Joseph, leicht zurückgenommen, aus dem Halbschatten heraus auf die Szene blickt. Ein Baum mit fein ausgearbeiteten Blättern rahmt die Darstellung nach links und verstärkt den landschaftlichen Charakter des Bildes. Die zarte Modellierung der Gesichter, die weich gerundeten Kinderkörper sowie die harmonische Farbigkeit mit warmen Rot- und Grüntönen verweisen deutlich auf den bolognesischen Umkreis von Denys Calvaert, der für seine Synthese flämischer Detailgenauigkeit mit italienischer Idealschönheit bekannt ist. Besonders charakteristisch sind die sanften Übergänge von Licht zu Schatten, die ruhige, ausgewogene Komposition sowie der betont intime Andachtscharakter, der für kleinformatige Werke aus Calvaerts Umfeld typisch ist. Im Vergleich zu gesicherten Hauptwerken Denys Calvaerts erscheint die Ausführung jedoch weniger komplex in der anatomischen Durchbildung und Lasurtechnik, was für eine Entstehung im näheren Umkreis oder in der Werkstatt des Künstlers spricht.
