Partially damaged, colour loss, dirty surface, old retouching. Landscape-format capriccio with monumental ancient ruins. In an idealised landscape, an architectural ensemble of columns, arches and sculptural figures rises up, enlivened by small groups of people. The composition combines classical architectural elements with an atmospherically dense landscape representation, thus following the tradition of veduta-like fantasy landscapes popular in the 18th century. Muted, earthy colours with emphasised chiaroscuro modelling. Despite its poor state of preservation, the original spatial effect remains clearly discernible. Provenance: Private collection in southern Germany.
